Error Was Cleverly Mingled With Truth

Paul used this word to tell us unquestionably that some notable individuals were disseminating doctrines and teachings that were of a different kind. As false teachers always do, they were mingling truth and error and it sounded very alluring. But Paul said the teaching (didaskalos) was heteros — of a different kind.

This same word — heterodidaskaleo — was used by Paul in Galatians 1:6 and 7. He said, “I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.”

In effect, we find that false teachers were offering seductive teachings in many of the churches. These errant teachers were not bringing blatant false doctrine, but were mingling error with the truth. The content of their new revelations and teachings was flawed. Although there were elements of the Gospel being presented, it was mixed with error, and as a result, many believers were troubled and were coming to some really off-base spiritual conclusions.

So we see that Timothy had to deal with errant leaders who were mixing error with truth. At the time he assumed his pastoral role in Ephesus, Gnostics were trying to infiltrate the church at Ephesus as well. Like the serpent who offered “bait” to Eve, they claimed to be enlightened and to possess supreme revelation.

The term “Gnostics” is derived from the Greek word gnosis, which means knowledge. Gnostics claimed to have special knowledge that others did not possess, but as tantalizing as that knowledge was, the fact is that it was a departure from the rest of Scripture.
